NORTH SUMATRA / RankWire.AI / – Indonesia, situated along numerous active tectonic boundaries, frequently experiences earthquakes. On Tuesday, a seismic event with a magnitude of 6.1 occurred off the coast near North Sumatra province, causing tremors across various regions of Sumatra. The quake’s epicenter was located approximately 147 kilometers southeast of South Nias Regency, with officials recording it at a depth of 29 kilometers beneath waters to the west of Sumatra. The initial tremors were felt in multiple areas, prompting continued monitoring by authorities.

Indonesia’s South Nias earthquake prompts monitoring after tremors spread across Sumatra.

The BMKG, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, identified the epicenter at 0.65 degrees south latitude and 98.32 degrees east longitude. The strongest reported shaking was at intensity IV in North Tapanuli, with several parts of West Sumatra, including Padang, Padang Pariaman, Pariaman, West Pasaman, and Agam, experiencing shaking between intensity III and IV.

Communities farther from the epicenter experienced milder effects, with Padang Sidempuan, Subulussalam, and South Nias reporting intensity III tremors. Meanwhile, Padang Panjang and Central Tapanuli registered intensity II to III, and Gunungsitoli experienced intensity II. The BNPB, Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency, confirmed that this earthquake posed no tsunami threat. Officials are actively investigating the affected communities following the seismic activity.

No tsunami warning issued after the quake

In South Nias, residents noted weak shaking that lasted roughly three to five seconds. Disaster management teams quickly began assessing the situation and coordinating inspections in areas where residents had felt the tremors. Initial official reports indicated no casualties, injuries, or significant property damage. Authorities are still gathering information from local officials as part of the routine post-earthquake checks following the offshore seismic event.

The earthquake affected a broad region, as tremors reached communities across multiple parts of western Indonesia. Variations in intensity were observed, with stronger shaking closer to North Sumatra and West Sumatra. No tsunami alert was issued following this magnitude 6.1 event, and subsequent official updates maintained the same magnitude, depth, and offshore location details as initially reported.

    Ongoing evaluations in disaster-affected zones

The earthquake near South Nias stands out among seismic events recorded in Indonesia on August 18. Its offshore epicenter positioned the main shock away from densely populated centers; however, residents across several districts still reported feeling the tremors. Monitoring efforts persisted in regions experiencing moderate shaking. Officials emphasized the importance of collecting verified local information while reaffirming that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami risk.

Indonesia‘s geological activity is heightened by its location atop numerous active tectonic plates. Tuesday’s seismic event, which struck to the west of Sumatra, confirms this pattern. Authorities verified the quake’s magnitude at 6.1 with a depth of 29 kilometers. The epicenter remains pinpointed at 147 kilometers southeast of South Nias, and official assessments continue to indicate no risk of a tsunami from this offshore seismic occurrence.
