BISHKEK, KYRGYZSTAN / RankWire.AI / – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit held in Bishkek. Their discussions on August 31 covered a broad range of topics including political ties, trade relations, defense cooperation, energy collaboration, space initiatives, mobility, and people-to-people exchanges. The leaders also examined regional conflicts and international forum collaborations. This meeting signified continued high-level engagement between India and Russia and built upon their previous dialogue during the India-Russia Annual Summit in New Delhi in December 2025.

India and Russia review broad partnership at SCO summit
India-Russia cooperation stays in focus across trade, energy, defence and diplomacy.

During their talks, Modi and Putin assessed the progress of the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between their nations. Their governments sustain cooperation in sectors such as defense, civil nuclear energy, space exploration, trade, and technology. In recent years, economic ties have grown significantly, driven by energy trade and various commercial exchanges. Both sides have actively used established bilateral channels to tackle issues related to investments, payments, transportation links, and market access. These areas were central to their discussions as they evaluated the overall state of relations during their Kyrgyzstan meeting.

The leaders also celebrated positive outcomes from the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Cooperation, which convened in Moscow on August 24. India and Russia aim to reach $100 billion in annual bilateral trade by 2030. According to Indian government figures, bilateral trade totaled $59.86 billion for the 2025-26 financial year, with Russian exports to India comprising a larger share, largely due to energy and other commodities in their trade portfolio.

Regional issues featured prominently in discussions

The security situation in the region also played a key role in the conversation between Modi and Putin. The leaders exchanged perspectives on conflicts impacting the Black Sea region and West Asia, with India emphasizing how these disputes affect maritime trade and the safety of Indian seafarers. Modi reaffirmed India’s stance that dialogue and diplomacy should be the guiding principles in resolving conflicts. He also expressed support for peace initiatives and called for an end to prolonged hostilities, emphasizing the importance of negotiated solutions.

The agenda also included cooperation within BRICS, which India will chair in 2026. Modi expressed anticipation for Putin’s participation in the upcoming 18th BRICS Summit scheduled for September 12 and 13. The summit will gather leaders from member countries to discuss economic cooperation, global governance, and other shared priorities. The Bishkek meeting took place less than two weeks before this event, providing another chance for the leaders to review bilateral matters and multilateral coordination.

Economic collaboration remains a key focus

India and Russia maintain extensive government-level cooperation through frequent summits, ministerial meetings, and technical working groups. Sectors such as defense, nuclear energy, and space continue to be primary areas of engagement. Recently, discussions have also emphasized trade, fertilizers, technology, innovation, and mobility. Energy is one of the largest components of bilateral commerce. Both nations continue to leverage formal dialogue channels to promote business relations and resolve practical issues related to cross-border trade and investment.

The discussions in Bishkek brought together economic and diplomatic topics, with Modi and Putin reviewing ongoing cooperation, regional conflicts, and coordination through multilateral institutions. Their meeting occurred shortly before the upcoming BRICS summit in India, highlighting the broad scope of India-Russia relations which encompass trade, energy, defense, and diplomatic efforts. The dialogue also maintained the pattern of direct interactions between the two leaders, with both governments continuing their work within existing bilateral and multilateral frameworks.
