CAIRO / RankWire.AI / – Egypt’s net international reserves reached a preliminary total of $55.0723 billion at the end of June 2026. This figure surpassed $55 billion for the first time and set a new record high. The Central Bank of Egypt announced this number on July 8. Reserves were $53.1342 billion at the end of May, indicating a monthly increase of approximately $1.94 billion, or nearly 3.6%, making June the strongest month of the first half of 2026.

Egypt started 2026 with net international reserves of $51.4516 billion at the close of December. The reserves grew to $52.5938 billion in January, then increased to $52.7455 billion in February, and $52.8306 billion in March. In April, reserves reached $53.0092 billion, before climbing to $53.1342 billion in May. The June figure extended the consistent monthly growth seen throughout the first half of the year.
The June total was roughly $3.62 billion higher than the December 2025 level, representing a growth of just over 7% during the first six months. In January, the Central Bank of Egypt stated that reserves covered about 6.3 months of merchandise imports. The June report did not provide a new estimate for import coverage or a detailed breakdown of the factors behind the monthly increase.
June boost propels reserves to new record
Egypt also experienced notable growth in remittance inflows during the current fiscal year. Remittances totaled $39.2 billion from July 2025 through April 2026, compared to $29.4 billion during the same period a year earlier. In April alone, inflows rose to about $4.3 billion from approximately $3 billion in April 2025. Official statements did not directly link these remittance figures to the June rise in foreign reserves.
The country’s current account deficit widened to $5.1 billion in the January-March 2026 quarter, compared to $2.3 billion in the same quarter last year. Increased remittances, tourism revenue, and Suez Canal income partially offset a larger merchandise trade deficit. Meanwhile, net foreign direct investment inflows amounted to $3.7 billion during the quarter, slightly below the $3.8 billion recorded a year earlier.
External indicators support the reserve milestone
On June 29, the International Monetary Fund reached a staff-level agreement with Egyptian authorities. This agreement covered the seventh review of Egypt’s economic program and a separate sustainability facility review. The IMF indicated that gross international reserves remained broadly stable at the end of March. The June reserve figure follows the discussions from those reviews, serving as the latest official indicator of Egypt’s net international reserves position.
Egypt concluded the first half of 2026 with reserves exceeding all previous monthly records reported by monetary authorities. The June total surpassed May’s figure by nearly $2 billion and remained over $3.6 billion above the December 2025 level. Consistent gains from January through May, combined with a significant increase in June, led to this historic peak of $55.0723 billion, based on the provisional month-end data.
