MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – As part of the ongoing 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak, health officials in Michigan have confirmed two fatalities. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported a total of 11,234 cases as of August 3. During the period ending July 30, the state also documented 193 hospitalizations. Both individuals who died had significant underlying health issues. Officials indicated that cyclosporiasis and dehydration might have exacerbated their conditions but did not release further personal details.

Michigan reports first deaths tied to cyclospora outbreak
Health officials track 11,234 Michigan cyclospora cases and 193 hospitalizations.

These two patients exhibited symptoms prior to the voluntary recall of iceberg lettuce announced on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledged the fatalities in an update released on August 3. They described both as deaths associated with cyclosporiasis involving individuals with pre-existing health problems. Discrepancies between state and federal totals exist because agencies employ different reporting methods; Michigan’s total includes all cases identified during its investigation, whereas federal figures tend to focus on laboratory-confirmed infections.

Federal investigators continue to explore a separate outbreak across nine states linked to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico. By July 24, authorities had identified 1,947 cases involving individuals who reported exposure at Taco Bell. At least 98 of these patients required hospitalization. The reported illnesses occurred from June 22 to July 20. The detailed federal count initially did not include Michigan’s two deaths, which were confirmed later.

Recall Results in Market Withdrawal of Iceberg Lettuce

Taylor Farms de Mexico pulled iceberg lettuce originating from central Mexico from the U.S. market. This recall affected several food-service products and some Marketside lettuce sold through Walmart stores. The impacted retail items included iceberg salad and shredded iceberg lettuce bearing use-by dates from July 18 through August 3. Between June 29 and July 16, Taylor Fresh Foods supplied recalled lettuce to 27 states. Taco Bell ceased using the supplier’s lettuce on July 17.

While Michigan has not linked every case to the recalled lettuce, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services continues to identify lettuce or salad greens as potential sources. Investigators have yet to designate a single product, farm, or supplier responsible for the entire state outbreak. Additionally, the two deaths have not been directly associated with a specific recalled product. According to federal officials, the iceberg lettuce cluster currently identified accounts for only a portion of the nationwide cyclosporiasis activity being examined.

Cyclosporiasis Can Persist for Multiple Weeks

Caused by a microscopic parasite, cyclospora leads to an intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis. It is typically contracted through eating contaminated food or drinking tainted water. Common symptoms include frequent watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, bloating, and fatigue. Symptoms generally develop approximately one week after exposure, though the timing can differ. Without proper treatment, the illness may last over a month and may recur after short periods of improvement.

Health authorities recommend consumers discard recalled iceberg lettuce or return it to the point of purchase. They also advise washing containers and surfaces that have come into contact with the product. Anyone experiencing symptoms, especially after recent iceberg lettuce consumption, should seek medical care. Older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions face higher risks of dehydration. Michigan officials continue to update case numbers as investigations at local and state levels progress with new reports.
