THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO / RankWire.AI / – A rapidly expanding wildfire crisis unfolded in northern Ontario Wednesday, with close to 200 blazes burning across the region. Ontario reported 183 active wildland fires as of 3 p.m. on July 15, with the Northwest Fire Region accounting for 136 of those by evening. Of these, 63 fires remained uncontrolled, and eight new fires were recorded during the day. Hot, dry, and windy conditions sustained an extreme fire risk in several northern districts.

Authorities issued evacuation orders for Armstrong, Whitesand First Nation, Gull Bay First Nation, and Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation. Additional directives impacted Namaygoosisagagun First Nation and Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation. The Ontario Provincial Police coordinated evacuations and managed road closures throughout the affected areas. Residents near Ignace, Crystal Lake, and Highway 633 were advised to prepare for potential departure. Emergency officials urged the public to keep evacuation routes clear and to avoid unnecessary travel.

A wildfire engulfed Namaygoosisagagun, a remote community located approximately 200 kilometres north of Thunder Bay. Residents evacuated by boat, as no road connects the community to nearby towns. The Anishinabek Nation confirmed all known residents had reached safety, pending a comprehensive community assessment. The fire caused damage and destruction to homes and other structures. With about 40 residents, Namaygoosisagagun’s local leaders continued to inspect properties and evaluate the extent of the damage after evacuation.

Evacuations and Road Closures Impact Northern Ontario

Highway 599 remained shut between Highway 516 and Mishkeegogamang First Nation. Highway 527 also stayed closed between Gull Bay First Nation and Armstrong. Meanwhile, Highway 11 reopened between Highways 633 and 623, although firefighting efforts continued nearby. Canadian National Railway halted operations near Armstrong after flames encircled a train, with personnel evacuating safely. Authorities cautioned drivers to anticipate changing conditions and adhere to all closure notices.

Firefighting teams concentrated on protecting communities, residences, and critical infrastructure across northwestern Ontario. Dryden 13 combined with nearby fires in the Wabakimi region to create the larger Thunder Bay 36 fire. Other priority areas included Quetico Provincial Park, Atikokan, Upsala, Cat Lake, and Fort Hope. Aerial water bombers targeted active fire lines while ground crews established containment barriers. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources mobilized available personnel and equipment to the highest-risk zones.

Smoke Drifts into Southern Ontario and US States

Smoke from the wildfires spread from northern Ontario into the southern parts of the province and the northeastern United States. Toronto’s Air Quality Health Index reached 10+, indicating very high risk levels, during Wednesday’s heavy smoke. Environment Canada issued warnings about poor air quality and reduced visibility. Health officials recommended that children, seniors, and individuals with heart or lung conditions limit outdoor activities. Fine particles from the smoke can irritate airways and exacerbate existing health issues.

A Restricted Fire Zone was established across the Northwest Fire Region and parts of northeastern Ontario. The order prohibited open-air burning, including campfires, and suspended existing burning permits. Ontario reported 453 wildland fires so far this year, compared to 349 at the same point in 2025. The 10-year average for that period stands at 312 fires. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources urged residents to follow evacuation instructions and to check official updates on roads and wildfires before traveling.
