MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s energy production experienced a 4.3% year-on-year increase during the initial eight months of 2026. The total generated electricity reached 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours, up from 35,935.3 GWh in the same period of 2025. This growth corresponds to roughly 1,546.5 GWh. Data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated positive trends in multiple governorates. In August alone, electricity output was 5,743.9 GWh, an increase from 5,676.9 GWh in July. Overall, national electricity production remained above the figures recorded in 2025.

Muscat saw the most significant rise in electricity generation, with a 204.8% increase compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah experienced a 44.1% growth, while Al Wusta recorded an 8.4% rise. Production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.5%. Dhofar’s output grew by 4.6% over the same period. Regional variations in electricity growth were notable, with many governorates showing higher output during this timeframe.
In contrast, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah displayed a different trend, with combined electricity production in these two governorates decreasing by 16.4% when compared to the first eight months of 2025. Musandam’s production was 376.0 GWh, essentially unchanged from the previous year. The regional data revealed that most areas saw increases in electricity output, contributing to the overall rise in Oman’s total electricity generation through August 2026. The figures encompass data from January to August 2026.
Overall net electricity output increases across Oman
Net electricity production also grew during this period, rising 4.6% to 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh in the previous year. This figure includes electricity purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company as well as the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat led the growth with a 204.4% increase. Al Dakhiliyah saw a 44.2% rise, while Al Wusta and Dhofar increased by 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. The overall national increase was approximately 1,592.1 GWh.
Net production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah combined grew by 5.4%. Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6% in net output. Musandam’s net production was 368.0 GWh, with its annual change rate remaining at 0.0%. Despite regional differences, Oman’s overall net electricity generation stayed above the levels seen in 2025. The regional patterns largely mirrored the fluctuations in total electricity output, with several governorates showing increased net production over the eight months.
Water production decreases through August 2026
During the same period, Oman’s water output declined. Total water production dropped 3.5%, amounting to 330.65 million cubic metres compared to roughly 342.71 million in the previous year. Muscat’s water output fell by 6.2% to approximately 128.07 million cubic metres from about 136.57 million during the same months of 2025. Other governorates saw a 3.4% decrease, with production at around 149.90 million cubic metres, down from approximately 155.19 million cubic metres the year before.
Dhofar bucked the national trend, with water production rising by 3.4% to about 52.68 million cubic metres from roughly 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest data indicates that electricity and water figures moved in opposite directions across Oman through August 2026. While electricity output increased at both total and net levels, water production overall declined despite Dhofar’s growth. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classifies these figures as preliminary.
