South Korea’s Foreign Reserves Hit $442.28 Billion in August, Reaching Four-Month High

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – Amid ongoing fluctuations in global markets, South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves experienced their largest monthly increase in August, totaling $442.28 billion at the end of the month. The Bank of Korea announced a rise of $14.33 billion from $427.95 billion recorded at July’s close. This surge marked the most significant growth since official reserve data collection began in 1971 and pushed holdings to their highest point since May 2022, reflecting a notable acceleration compared to the modest gains in the preceding two months.

South Korea foreign reserves reach $442.28 billion in August
South Korea recorded its largest monthly increase in foreign exchange reserves in August.

South Korea’s reserves have now increased for three consecutive months, following increases of $370 million in June and $590 million in July. The August growth also surpassed the previous monthly record of $14.29 billion, set in May 2009. Despite this increase, total reserves still fall short of the all-time peak of $469.21 billion achieved in October 2021. The figures represent assets held within the country’s official foreign exchange reserves and are reported in U.S. dollars.

The Bank of Korea explained that the boost in August resulted from higher foreign currency deposits, returns on reserve asset management, and movements in the exchange rate. Fluctuations in currency values influence the dollar valuation of assets denominated in euros, pounds, and other currencies. When reporting total reserves, these holdings are converted into U.S. dollars. Consequently, shifts in major exchange rates can increase or decrease the reported reserve total, even if the actual foreign currency assets remain unchanged within the portfolio.

Securities and deposits primarily account for August’s reserve expansion

Foreign securities continue to be the dominant element of South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves. Their value increased by $7.07 billion in August, reaching $387.07 billion, which accounts for 87.5% of the total reserves. This category encompasses government and corporate securities held within official reserve assets. Foreign currency deposits also saw a significant rise during the month, climbing by $7.17 billion to $30.30 billion. These increases, alongside the growth in foreign securities, contributed significantly to the overall reserve rise.

Smaller changes were noted in other reserve components. Special drawing rights rose by $60 million to $15.77 billion, while the reserve position in the international monetary system was approximately $4.34 billion. Gold holdings remained steady at $4.79 billion. The combined increase in securities and foreign currency deposits accounted for nearly all of the $14.33 billion growth in August. Despite this, the reserve structure remains heavily reliant on securities, although deposits experienced one of their largest monthly increases among individual components during August.

Reserves reach highest level since May 2022

The August reserve total marked South Korea’s highest in over four years and three months. The last time reserves exceeded this level was in May 2022, when they reached $447.71 billion. The August figure also narrowed the gap with the all-time record of $469.21 billion reported in October 2021. Official foreign exchange reserves include securities, deposits, gold, special drawing rights, and the country’s reserve position in the international monetary system. The data is published monthly as part of the routine reporting on the nation’s external financial assets.

The latest figures indicate a notable shift in the growth rate of reserves during the summer months. After modest increases in June and July, August delivered a record monthly gain. By the end of August, South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves stood at $442.28 billion, representing an increase of nearly $14.3 billion from July. While still below the historical peak, this figure remains the highest since May 2022, supported by rises in securities, foreign currency deposits, and the dollar value of selected reserve assets.
