U.S.-Iraq Discussions Emphasize Oil, Energy, and Investment Initiatives

WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – U.S. President Donald Trump and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi engaged in talks at the White House on Tuesday, focusing on broader economic and energy cooperation. Their discussions centered on oil, natural gas, electricity, trade, and private sector investment. Trump indicated that the United States anticipates pursuing numerous commercial agreements with Iraq, including arrangements related to crude oil production. Neither government disclosed contract values, project timelines, nor a comprehensive list of signed agreements. This meeting was the highlight of al-Zaidi’s official visit to Washington.

US Iraq talks focus on oil, power and investment
Energy cooperation anchors a wider US Iraq economic and commercial agenda.

Al-Zaidi was accompanied by ministers, senior officials, and business representatives as they discussed five key economic sectors. Iraqi officials highlighted energy, transport, technology, healthcare, and education among the topics. Baghdad has instructed its oil, electricity, and communications ministries to prioritize qualified American companies. Additionally, Iraq explored banking and insurance reforms with U.S. financial institutions and industry groups. Officials described the visit as a step toward establishing tangible commercial links between Iraq and the United States.

Energy talks included plans to increase crude output and develop domestic natural gas resources. Iraq also aims to attract investment into power generation and transmission sectors, where significant supply gaps remain a major concern for the public. The cabinet approved an agreement with U.S.-based HKN Energy to develop the Himreen oilfield in northern Iraq. It also authorized the Electricity Ministry to finalize a broad cooperation agreement with General Electric, focusing on electricity generation, grid capacity, and transmission infrastructure.

    Energy Projects Drive Investment Negotiations

Chevron has engaged with Iraqi authorities over key upstream projects, including the West Qurna 2 oilfield. Earlier this year, Baghdad moved to replace Russia’s Lukoil as the operator of this field. Iraqi officials have also coordinated with Exxon Mobil, HKN Energy, and other U.S. companies. Al-Zaidi stated that his government plans to significantly boost oil production within three years. Iraq possesses substantial crude reserves and remains a founding member of OPEC. Any increase in production must align with the OPEC+ supply framework applicable to Iraq.

During the White House meeting, al-Zaidi emphasized Iraq’s desire for a fair share of OPEC’s production quota and affirmed Iraq’s intention to stay within the group. He linked this request to Iraq’s reconstruction needs following years of conflict with the Islamic State. Al-Zaidi estimated reconstruction damages exceeded $400 billion, with some displaced Iraqis still lacking permanent homes. Oil income remains vital for Iraq’s public spending, reconstruction, and social services. Consequently, the government has prioritized oil and gas investment within its economic agenda during the Washington visit.

Iraq Develops New Export Routes for Crude Oil

Iraq is making progress on alternative crude export routes. The Oil Ministry signed a preliminary agreement with a U.S.-Qatari consortium to conduct feasibility studies on the Kirkuk-Baniyas pipeline. This route is planned to extend from oilfields near Kirkuk to Syria’s Mediterranean coast. Additionally, Iraq has initiated the Basra-Haditha pipeline project, which aims for a capacity of 2.5 million barrels per day. These initiatives are part of Iraq’s wider energy infrastructure development program.

The discussions in Washington also addressed cooperation beyond energy. Trump and al-Zaidi reviewed potential investments in communications, technology, transportation, and broader infrastructure sectors. Iraqi officials reported that the delegation met with U.S. government representatives, financial institutions, and corporate leaders during the visit. Both nations highlighted economic cooperation as a central element of their bilateral relationship. Public statements following the White House meeting confirmed ongoing negotiations but did not specify final terms for all projects under discussion.
