Calls Grow for Artist Inclusion in Australia’s New AI Oversight Office

CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA / RankWire.AI / – Creators in Australia are advocating for a direct involvement in the federal government’s recently established Office of AI. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the formation of this body on July 15, as part of the country’s national artificial intelligence strategy. The office’s responsibilities include overseeing policies related to copyright, infrastructure, consumer protection, employment, education, and national security. Artists and rights organizations have welcomed the initiative but emphasize the need for formal representation in decisions impacting creative industries.

Australia AI office faces calls for artist representation
Creators seek a formal voice as Australia develops national artificial intelligence rules.

The Australian Recording Industry Association emphasized that musicians and other creators should have a say in guiding the office’s copyright-related activities. Chief executive Annabelle Herd pointed out that generative AI depends heavily on music, books, journalism, film, and visual art. Australian law permits developers to utilize protected material if they obtain permission from copyright holders. Herd also called for clearer enforcement mechanisms and a more straightforward process for creators pursuing smaller claims.

The government clarified that authors, artists, and journalists must retain control over how their work is used for AI training. It also reaffirmed that existing copyright ownership will remain a key component of the new framework. However, no licensing system or payment structure for protected content has been announced. Additionally, the government has yet to confirm whether representatives from the creative sector, publishers, or rights holders will have formal seats within the Office of AI.

Creative Industry Pushes for Formal Protections

APRA AMCOS expressed support for the new office and urged policymakers to implement licensing arrangements based on consent and remuneration. The organization represents songwriters, composers, and music publishers across Australia and New Zealand. CEO Dean Ormston also advocated for safeguarding Indigenous cultural and intellectual property. Earlier in July, artists, authors, and industry representatives visited Canberra to defend current copyright laws and seek direct engagement on AI policy.

Anthropic stated it respects the government’s process and intends to adhere to Australian regulations. The company has considered a significant data centre investment in Australia linked to the development of its Claude AI model. Albanese highlighted that Australia offers skilled labor, energy resources, and a stable legal environment conducive to tech investments. The government has not tied copyright access to any specific data centre project nor approved exemptions for AI training purposes.

    Framework Encompasses Data Centre Regulations

Australia’s upcoming AI standards will establish mandatory requirements for large data centre operators. These companies will be responsible for supporting new electricity supplies and covering costs associated with connecting to the grid. They must also implement measures to reduce power consumption during grid stress and enhance water efficiency. The National Cabinet will review the framework in August 2026, with legislation expected to be introduced in early 2027.

The Office of AI will oversee the implementation efforts across federal departments and collaborate with state and territory governments. Officials also plan to prioritize consumer safety initiatives building on the recently launched AI Safety Institute. While opposition members have expressed concerns about increased regulation, the Greens have called for stronger legal protections. The full composition of the office, including advisory bodies and participation procedures for the creative sector, has not yet been disclosed.
