European Commission Enhances Ebola Outbreak Response with New PCR Testing Support

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – In a significant step to bolster efforts against the ongoing Ebola crisis, the European Commission has committed an additional €2.1 million to acquire PCR tests targeting the Bundibugyo virus. This funding enables the purchase of open-platform diagnostic kits that laboratories can operate with their existing infrastructure. The procurement process received backing from the European Health and Digital Executive Agency. Delivery of these supplies is expected to commence in August, as health teams address a large-scale outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is impacting neighboring regions.

European Commission adds PCR support for Ebola outbreak
PCR testing support strengthens the international response to Ebola in DR Congo.

The World Health Organization will coordinate the distribution of these tests via its Hub for Global Health Emergencies Logistics based in Dubai. Following this, WHO will oversee the allocation to various locations involved in the Ebola response. PCR testing plays a crucial role by allowing laboratories to confirm infections rapidly and support ongoing surveillance efforts around identified cases. Confirmed results inform patient treatment, isolation procedures, and contact tracing. This latest batch of supplies enhances laboratory capacity at a critical moment when authorities continue monitoring transmission across multiple provinces and health zones within the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Previously, the European Commission allocated another €2.5 million for rapid molecular point-of-care testing kits and devices. These tools will assist the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in its regional response initiatives. With these two diagnostic agreements, the total European funding dedicated to Ebola diagnostics now reaches €4.6 million. This initiative forms part of a broader European aid package supporting countries confronting the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak, including medical supplies, preparedness strategies, and public health resources aimed at strengthening response capabilities in affected and neighboring regions.

Laboratory capacity expands amid widespread outbreak

According to WHO data, the Democratic Republic of the Congo had reported 4,665 confirmed Ebola cases and 2,184 fatalities by August 12. The outbreak has affected 54 health zones across six provinces, namely Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé. WHO characterized this as the largest Ebola outbreak ever documented in the country. The agency also highlighted ongoing transmission within interconnected geographic clusters, which continues to place substantial demands on surveillance teams, laboratories, treatment centers, and local health services.

In its August update, WHO maintained a very high national risk level for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with neighboring countries assessed as high risk and other regions as low. Following a meeting of its International Health Regulations Emergency Committee on August 24, WHO issued updated temporary recommendations. These guidelines address enhanced surveillance, case detection, infection prevention, clinical management, community engagement, and public health measures related to mobility and large gatherings during the ongoing crisis.

European health aid reaches nearly €500 million

The European Commission has announced the mobilization of €493 million to support emergency responses, vaccines, treatments, and health security initiatives across the Great Lakes region and Uganda. European health agencies are also actively involved in laboratory testing, surveillance, and preparedness activities. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control continues to classify the risk to populations in Europe as very low. Since Ebola spreads mainly through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, rapid detection, safe clinical practices, and robust infection control measures are essential to curb transmission.

The Bundibugyo virus outbreak remains classified as a public health emergency of international concern under WHO’s framework. Currently, no approved vaccines or specific treatments exist for Bundibugyo virus disease. Consequently, health authorities continue to focus on surveillance, swift diagnosis, isolation, clinical management, infection prevention, and close contact monitoring. The recent PCR testing supplies reinforce laboratory capacity to support these efforts. WHO, Africa CDC, and national health agencies continue coordinating their response efforts to ensure quick case identification and sustained public health interventions in affected communities.
