NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – As markets responded to international developments and sector-specific performance, Wall Street experienced a significant rally on Monday, driven by advances in technology stocks and a decline in crude oil prices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 693.38 points, or 1.32%, reaching a new all-time high of 53,178.41. The S&P 500 increased by 1.48% to 7,600.50, nearing its record levels, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed 2.13% and closed at 25,913.90. Investment activity was broad-based, with gains across both large and smaller U.S. companies.

Dow sets record high as Big Tech rallies and crude oil falls
Wall Street posted broad gains as the Dow reached a record close and the Nasdaq advanced.

Technology and communication giants led the charge, delivering some of the day’s strongest gains. Meta Platforms and Alphabet contributed to a 4.3% rise in the S&P 500 communication services sector. Amazon’s stock rose 4.6% after surpassing a market valuation of $3 trillion for the first time. A fund tracking seven major tech firms gained nearly 4%, helping to boost the overall market sentiment throughout trading hours.

Meanwhile, oil prices declined amid geopolitical developments involving the United States and Iran. Brent crude fell by 4.7% and settled at $83.77 per barrel. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would postpone additional strikes against Iran, also mentioning discussions on reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iran contested that formal negotiations had not been scheduled. This decline in oil prices eased inflation pressures temporarily, providing support to stocks and government bonds.

Falling oil prices bolster market confidence

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note dropped to approximately 4.68% during the session, which positively impacted technology shares by reducing financing costs for growth-oriented companies. Investors remained attentive to the Federal Reserve and recent economic data. New York Federal Reserve President John Williams indicated that inflationary pressures should ease gradually. Rising bond prices, driven by declining yields, added further support to U.S. equities.

The positive market momentum extended beyond the tech sector. The Russell 2000 index, representing smaller companies, increased 1.7% to reach 2,981.91. On the New York Stock Exchange, stocks advancing outnumbered declining ones by 2.62 to 1. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq’s ratio stood at 3.01 to 1. The Nasdaq also reflected strong demand, with a total trading volume of 19.36 billion shares, surpassing the 20-day average of 17.66 billion. The S&P 500 registered 15 new highs for the year and only one new low.

Corporate earnings reports also played a role in supporting investor enthusiasm. Out of 304 S&P 500 companies that reported through Friday, earnings are estimated to have grown by 29.3% for the quarter. Data from LSEG shows about 85.2% of these firms surpassed analysts’ expectations. Strong quarterly results from major corporations helped counter concerns about rising interest rates and technology sector spending. Notably, Marriott International declined 7% after issuing a third-quarter profit outlook below market estimates, making it one of the day’s prominent decliners.

Overall, Monday’s gains marked a strong start to August for U.S. equities after a mixed July. The Dow reached a new record, while the S&P 500 closed within 0.1% of its peak. The Nasdaq also extended its gains into 2026, led by a rally in technology stocks. For the year so far, the Dow has increased by 10.6%, the S&P 500 by 11%, and the Nasdaq by 11.5% as of Monday’s close.
