TOKYO, JAPAN / RankWire.AI / – With intense rainfall and powerful winds, Typhoon Dujuan impacted eastern Japan on Monday, prompting emergency landslide alerts and widespread interruptions to transportation. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest landslide warning for Oshima in the Izu Islands shortly after midday. Rain accumulations surpassed 500 millimeters in parts of the island chain, while Chiba Prefecture recorded over 300 millimeters from Saturday through early Monday afternoon. Officials cautioned residents about potential flooding, rising rivers, landslides, and hazardous coastal conditions.

Typhoon Dujuan brings heavy rain, landslide risk and travel disruption across eastern Japan.

At midday, Dujuan was progressing north-northeast over waters west of Hachijojima, maintaining a broad storm-force wind zone. Meteorologists tracked its movement toward the Izu Islands and the Kanto area, with forecasts indicating the typhoon would pass near Kanto later on Monday as it sped northeast. Weather authorities warned of severe winds, rough seas, and additional heavy rainfall along the eastern Pacific coast. They also kept a close eye on linear rain bands, which can produce concentrated downpours over a short duration.

The storm’s impact extended to damage and closures across multiple prefectures. According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, three landslides occurred in Chiba by 2 p.m., destroying one residence and partially damaging another. Two additional landslides were reported in Miyazaki, resulting in one death and one injury. Heavy rainfall caused the closure of 32 sections across six expressways and three national roads. Flooding and fallen trees also led to the shutdown of 16 prefectural road segments across Ibaraki, Saitama, and Chiba.

Heavy Rains Disrupt Flights and Public Transit

By 11 a.m., the ministry’s update indicated that 384 flights scheduled for Monday had been canceled. The majority of these affected airports serving the Kanto region. Authorities had not yet reported any damage to airport infrastructure that would hinder operations. The typhoon also forced the cancellation of a major event in Chiba. The organizers called off the final day of the Tokyo Game Show due to the storm and associated transportation issues. Travelers experienced schedule changes as service providers adjusted to worsening weather conditions.

Rail and maritime transportation also suffered notable disruptions. By 1:45 p.m., eight operators had suspended service on 16 conventional railway lines, with plans for additional suspensions affecting 12 more lines. At that time, no Shinkansen services had been suspended. Maritime routes were halted on 36 routes, primarily in Kanto and Kyushu, while highway bus companies suspended 62 routes, mainly in Chiba and Nagano. Local bus services also paused on 26 routes, with some services continuing with partial suspensions.

Flood Prevention Measures Expanded as Dujuan Moves Northeast

Authorities have intensified flood control efforts amid rising water levels in river basins along the typhoon’s path. Thirteen dams reached thresholds that triggered pre-release actions, and three initiated early water releases. Nine dams carried out flood-control operations, with two still active at noon. As of midday, officials had not reported any river flooding. Emergency crews deployed pumping and lighting vehicles to Chiba to support drainage and nighttime response efforts. Local governments remained vigilant, monitoring rivers, slopes, and low-lying districts.

Forecasts predict continued heavy rainfall across Tokai, Kanto-Koshin, the Izu Islands, and Tohoku through Monday. Accumulated rain could reach 250 millimeters in Kanto, Tokai, and the Izu Islands by Tuesday noon, while Tohoku may receive up to 150 millimeters during the same period. Authorities advised residents to stay alert for landslides, flooding, rising rivers, strong winds, and high waves. Warnings and evacuation notices continue to evolve as Typhoon Dujuan progresses northeastward over waters near eastern Japan.
