HIROSHIMA, JAPAN / RankWire.AI / – The global community continues to reflect on the devastating impact of nuclear weapons as Hiroshima marked the 81st anniversary of the 1945 atomic attack, emphasizing the need for nuclear disarmament. Mayor Kazumi Matsui addressed survivors, family members, government officials, and international delegates at the city’s Peace Memorial Park. At 8:15 a.m., a bell tolled—signaling the exact moment the atomic bomb detonated over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Attendees then observed a minute of silence to honor those who lost their lives or suffered due to the attack and its lingering effects.

Hiroshima marks 81st bomb anniversary with disarmament plea
Hiroshima’s anniversary keeps nuclear disarmament and survivor testimony in global focus.

Through Hiroshima’s annual Peace Declaration, Matsui challenged the persistent reliance on nuclear deterrence. He called on leaders of nuclear-armed nations to acknowledge the profound humanitarian repercussions of atomic weapons and to push for disarmament. The mayor also urged policymakers to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, urging them to listen directly to hibakusha, the survivors of the two bombings. For decades, Hiroshima has prioritized survivor testimonies and nuclear disarmament as core elements of its remembrance and international peace initiatives.

The ceremony was attended by approximately 50,000 people, with representatives from 121 countries and regions present, including European Union. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi participated in the Hiroshima memorial for the first time since becoming Japan’s prime minister. She reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to pursuing a pragmatic approach toward creating a world where nuclear weapons are never used. Takaichi highlighted the importance of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as a foundational element for disarmament and reaffirmed Japan’s longstanding three non-nuclear principles.

    Challenges Persist in Nuclear Diplomacy

This year’s commemoration followed the 2026 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, which concluded in May without reaching consensus on a substantive final document. It marked the third consecutive NPT review conference to end without an agreement. Matsui pointed to the complex international climate, urging governments to intensify efforts toward nuclear disarmament. While Japan supports the NPT framework, it has not joined the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The country remains under the protective nuclear umbrella of the United States through their security alliance.

During the Hiroshima ceremony, the United Nations delivered a message from Secretary-General António Guterres, read aloud by UN disarmament chief Izumi Nakamitsu. Guterres underscored the widening geopolitical divisions, growing mistrust, and renewed pressure on nuclear arms control agreements. He also warned that the progress made over decades in reducing nuclear arsenals is now reversing. The UN called for increased diplomacy, dialogue, adherence to international law, and multilateral cooperation to promote nuclear disarmament.

The legacy of hibakusha remains vital to Hiroshima’s identity

Japan officially recognizes 91,105 atomic bomb survivors, known as hibakusha, whose average age now exceeds 86. As their numbers decline, the urgency of preserving firsthand accounts from Hiroshima and Nagasaki intensifies. For decades, survivors have shared stories about the explosions, fires, and radiation, advocating for the complete abolition of nuclear weapons. Children representing Hiroshima also took part in Thursday’s ceremony, expressing their dedication to peace. The city maintains memorial programs, museums, and educational initiatives to keep survivor testimonies alive.

The atomic bombing of Hiroshima resulted in an estimated 140,000 deaths by the end of 1945. Three days later, the United States dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki, causing approximately 70,000 fatalities by year’s end. Japan announced its surrender on August 15, leading to the official conclusion of World War II in September. Hiroshima established Peace Memorial Park as a site for remembrance and peace education. Eighty-one years after the attack, the city continues to emphasize nuclear abolition and the human toll of atomic warfare as central themes in its message.
