OCCIDENTAL MINDORO / RankWire.AI / – The Philippines frequently experiences seismic activity due to the numerous active tectonic boundaries surrounding the archipelago. National seismic monitoring agencies continuously observe and update data as new information emerges. On Friday morning, an earthquake near Occidental Mindoro caused widespread shaking across parts of Luzon and Metro Manila, prompting immediate assessment by authorities. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, or PHIVOLCS, initially recorded the quake at 10:38 a.m. local time, with an estimated magnitude of 5.8, but subsequent analysis revised this figure to 5.4. The epicenter was located approximately 13 kilometers southwest of Mamburao, the provincial capital, with a depth of about 14 kilometers, originating from tectonic movement.

Philippines magnitude 5.4 quake shakes Mindoro region
Philippines earthquake in Occidental Mindoro is felt across Luzon and Metro Manila.

The seismic event was felt strongly across Mindoro during the late morning, with lighter tremors reaching neighboring provinces. The initial magnitude reading was higher, but after further review, officials confirmed the magnitude as 5.4. PHIVOLCS warned that aftershocks might follow the main tremor, though no damage was anticipated from the early assessment. Residents experienced noticeable ground movement, and some felt the shaking even in parts of the capital region, over 100 kilometers from the epicenter.

In Mamburao, the tremor registered Intensity 5, along with several communities in Oriental Mindoro. Cities such as Calapan, Naujan, Puerto Galera, San Teodoro, and Victoria also reported Intensity 5. Meanwhile, Taal in Batangas and towns like Abra de Ilog and Sablayan in Occidental Mindoro experienced Intensity 4. Seismic instruments recorded Intensity 5 in Mamburao and Puerto Galera. The strongest ground movements were concentrated across Mindoro, where residents observed the most significant shaking.

Shaking extends into Metro Manila and nearby provinces

The tremor’s effects were felt beyond Mindoro, reaching Metro Manila and regions farther north. Seismic stations noted Intensity 3 in Quezon City, Batangas City, Calapan City, and Victoria. Additional reports of Intensity 3 came from General Trias in Cavite and San Pedro in Laguna. Some residents in Manila evacuated their buildings as a precaution during the shaking. After the tremor ceased, normal activities resumed, and authorities continued inspecting the affected areas.

Weaker seismic readings appeared in other parts of Luzon. Parañaque City registered Intensity 2, along with Santa Cruz in Laguna and Guinayangan in Quezon. Seismic measurements varied by location, indicating different levels of ground motion across the region. Initial assessments found no significant structural damage, and monitoring persisted as officials kept watch for further tremors near Occidental Mindoro. The earthquake prompted ongoing observation by local authorities and seismic stations.

Official magnitude revision confirms 5.4 reading after preliminary reports

Following a detailed review of seismic data, experts confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude as 5.4. The depth remained about 14 kilometers, with the epicenter situated southwest of Mamburao. Communities in Occidental and Oriental Mindoro experienced the strongest shaking, while milder tremors reached Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon, and Metro Manila. The distribution of intensity readings indicated that a broad area across Luzon felt the quake that occurred on Friday morning.

The Philippines is prone to frequent earthquakes owing to its position along several active tectonic zones. Monitoring stations across the nation track seismic activity and update measurements as more data becomes available. The quake near Occidental Mindoro caused extensive ground shaking but, based on initial evaluations, no significant structural damage was reported. Authorities continue to monitor for aftershocks, and the latest official magnitude has been set at 5.4, replacing the earlier higher estimate.
