SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is broadening the accessibility of ChatGPT by offering unlimited text interactions to users on Free and Go subscriptions with GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced that this update will take effect next week and will still be governed by safeguards to prevent misuse. During this rollout, GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for those accounts. Additionally, free-tier users will see the addition of a Think button, which enables the system to allocate more time to complex questions before providing a response.

This new feature applies solely to text-based conversations and does not eliminate all usage restrictions across ChatGPT. OpenAI clarified that limitations will stay in place for file uploads, image generation, and other tools that demand extra processing power. The Think feature will accompany unlimited messaging starting next week, giving GPT-5.6 Luna increased reasoning capacity for tasks requiring deeper analysis. The company continues to implement separate controls for features beyond standard text interactions, including tools accessible under different usage limits.

OpenAI introduced GPT-5.6 as a series of models that includes Luna, Sol, and Terra. Among these, Luna is designed to be the faster and more cost-effective option. The company stated that ChatGPT now serves approximately one billion users each week across activities such as searches, research, planning, writing, and more. With this latest update, users on Free and Go plans will have Luna as their primary ChatGPT model. The rollout increases access to the core chat service while maintaining tool-specific restrictions.

Paid subscriptions get an upgraded reasoning engine

Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro are also receiving an enhanced version of GPT-5.6 Sol for daily use. Sol provides both rapid responses and more detailed reasoning within the paid plans. OpenAI mentioned that this update results in more targeted answers and minimizes unnecessary details when a straightforward reply suffices. Paid users are also gaining a reasoning slider across web, mobile, and desktop platforms, allowing them to control how much processing power ChatGPT uses for tasks involving research, planning, coding, or writing.

The company further reported a decrease in factual inaccuracies during internal assessments of its latest models. These evaluations included prompts related to finance, healthcare, and law that required precise factual data. OpenAI indicated that responses with at least one factual error dropped by about 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. For GPT-5.6 Sol, the reduction was approximately 68%. The firm also noted improvements in Sol’s handling of dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when accuracy was crucial to the response.

Unlimited messaging remains subject to safety restrictions

OpenAI confirmed that its latest ChatGPT models incorporate additional protections for users it considers under 18. These safeguards aim to prevent romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that might substitute real-world relationships. They also enforce limits on sexual content, eating disorders, hazardous activities, restricted items, and graphic violence. The company stated that new evaluations for responses involving younger audiences have been added. The unlimited text conversations will continue to operate within the same safeguards when expanded access becomes available for Free and Go accounts.

This update focuses on the primary ChatGPT experience rather than all OpenAI products utilizing GPT-5.6 models. The company noted that GPT-5.6 Sol versions used in ChatGPT Work and Codex are unaffected by this release. Paid users can now access the updated Sol model and reasoning controls. Meanwhile, Free and Go users will receive Luna as their default model this week. Unlimited messaging and the Think button will be introduced next week, with separate limits still in place for images, uploads, and other functionalities.
